Introduction to environmental horticulture surveying the structure and function of horticultural practices in the laboratory,
agricultural and natural landscapes. Examination of plant structures, growth processes, physiology, propagation, growth
media, biological competitors, environmental variables, and post-harvest factors of food, fiber, and ornamental plants.

Physical, chemical and biological properties of soil. Focus on soil classification, derivation, use function and management
including erosion, moisture retention, structure, cultivation, organic matter and microbiology. Laboratory topics include
soil type, classification, soil reaction, soil fertility and physical properties of soil. Total of 36 hours lecture and 54 hours of

ENVS 012 PLANT MATERIALS AND USAGE I

Identification, growth habits, culture and ornamental use of landscape and indoor plants adapted to climates of California.
Plants emphasized will come from the current California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers (CANGC) and
Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) Certification Tests Plant Lists. Covers those plants best observed and studied
in the spring of the year. Plant materials from local regions will also be included, with special emphasis on drought tolerant
plants. Total of 36 hours lecture and 54 hours laboratory.
