- Description
- In the early 1920's, many of church's young mothers felt the need to establish Sunday school which resulted in this photo of the first Sunday School student body. The building also held special significance in the congregation?ÇÖs history. Japanese Union Church 293 Kensington Place Pasadena, CA was crafted in harmony with those built by mid-Western settlers of the community before then. The distinctive, two-sided wrap around porch and other architectural features of the Indiana style lent historic status to this two-story house. In 1924, the new church was built in front of this house. This house was utilized as a manse; yet another was purchased in its stead and placed at 305 Kensington Place, allowing the old Sunday school home to open her doors to new students, fellowship and offer a valuable meeting place for the church. After WWII, the old Sunday school house became a home to Rev and Mrs Jingoro Kokubun, leader of the Japanese-speaking congregation; now called Kokubun House.
