- Robert James (b. 1906) and Eva Etta Newton Blount (b. 1911) of Prentiss, Mississippi came to Southern California in 1935 to better their lives. Immediately, he found a job in a Los Angeles foundry and she did housework. Within a year, they bought a new Oldsmobile and drove home to Prentiss to pick up their four children: Jessica (b. 1927), James Earl (b. 1929), Mary Eva (b. 1932), and Kathryne (b. 1933). A fifth child, Donald Lee (b. 1941) was born in Monrovia.
