- Description
- This photograph was taken the day before the family left for internment in 1942. From left to right, mom Reiko, youngest Helen, 2nd son Richard, Elsie (15 years of age), oldest William - who just returned from Berkeley - and father Jiro. The family lived in the two-story building behind J. Morita Market, to the left of the photo. Often they had Japanese daily laborers who were boarders. Jiro did not believe they would be evacuated as this was America. A White neighbor persuaded Jiro to let him run the store but he gave up after a few months. The store was closed. The Moritas continued to make mortgage payments from the Army pay of their sons. The family went to Tulare Assembly Center and Gila River Camp.
