«NOMINATION SPEECHES OF CANDIDATES FOR STUDENT BODY OFFICES
DOROTHEA CAPPS
For Commissioner of Girls' Wel¬
fare
MARJORIE HANSEN
For Commissioner of Publications
“Suddenly there came a tapping,
as of someone gently rapping, rap¬
ping at my chamber door.” Today
there comes again a rapping, a rap¬
ping on the door of opportunity,
opportunity for those who seek of¬
fices in tiie Student Body and op¬
portunity for the Student Body to
elect those whom they would have
as their representatives.
At the door of opportunity there
stands one who seeks an office, one
who is most assuredly deserving of
that office. That person is Dorothea
Capps. The opportunity now pre¬
sents itself to the Student Body to
elect her to that office. For three
years Dorothea Capps has worked,
worked with whole-hearted effort,
for the honor of P. H. S. and the
Girls' League. She has given her
time and energy to the girls of
this school. Now she stands where
the students of P. H. S. may re¬
ward her for the good work she
has done on their behalf. She has
had the experience which will en¬
able her to carry out the duties re¬
quired of her; and she has the in¬
terest that will make that work a
bigger one, one that will
о,
good
for many years to come.
Friends, with the good of P. H.
S. at heart, Dorothea will make an
excellent commissioner, and it af¬
fords me greut pleasure and honor
to nominate her this day for Com¬
missioner of Girl’s Welfare.
ELIZABETH GRASSIE
Campaign Manager.
BERNARD MELEK1AN
For Commissioner of Debating
Fellow students —
I ■ am here today to nominate
for the office of Commissioner of
Debating, a fellow whom I feel has
all the practical experience neces¬
sary for the success of such an >f-
fice. Ever since my candidate en¬
tered high school he has been in
some way associated with debating.
His teachers claim he can produce
the most sound arguments on ab¬
solutely no grounds whatsoever.
He can sit in class for a solid se¬
mester doing nothing and then
convince the teacher that it would
be little short of crime not to
give him at least a “B.” A man
who can talk like that is the man
we want to introduce our speak¬
ers in assembly.
Mr. Melekian, my candidate, has
taken part in almost every debating
or oratoracal contest in P. H. S.
during the time«he has been here.
In the recent Davis Hall contest, he
was in the finals. He took the
second place in the G. A. Nelson
Oratorical Contest, is Managing
Editor of the Chronicle and Pre¬
sident of the Press club, an organ¬
ization to promote journalistic
work.
If elected, I feel that he will
he an unqualified success, not
only because of his ability to
speak all day on nothing in par¬
ticular ,but because of previous ex¬
perience gained in oratorical con¬
tests and debates —
Therefore, it gives me great
pleasure to nominate Mr. Bernard
Melekian for the office of Com¬
missioner of Debating.
I thank you.
CARL CARTWRIGHT
Campaign Manager.
MAY NOR SHOVE
For Commissioner of Boys' Wel¬
fare
Extra, extra, extra. Hear,
populus! We have a candidate
who is really capable of holding
down a student body office! My
candidate Is Marjorie Hansen. She
has for the last semester been ed¬
itor of our “Chronicle.” If you
don't believe that the success of
your paper is due to the efforts of
Marjorie, come around some eve¬
ning about seven o’colck and see
her working.
Or if you get up early enough,
drop into the office at seven in the
morning and see her then. She
has been responsible for your pap¬
er getting out on time every week.
Not only has she been working
on publications this semester, but
she has also been interested in this
department ever since she entered
school. Although the editorship
of the "Chronicle” is qualification
enough to receive your vote, she
has many other proofs of capabil¬
ity which 1 offer.
Her publicity campaign in con¬
nection with the G. A. A. Jinx was
nothing short of remarkable. The
big game “Chronicle” is another of
her successes. She is efficent as
an officer of the Press Club, which
edits the Pasadena Evening Post
one day each year.
Her capability is shown by the
fact that she has also been out for
sports and is a member of the
G. A. A.
Well, people, we’ve given you a
lot of qualifications for our candi¬
date. Now if you'll remember that
Marjorie is the most experienced
journalist attending high school,
and that she is cooperating with
the Annual staff in every way to
make your year book the best ever,
you'll be sure to give Marjorie
your support. Therefore, it is be¬
cause I know she is capable of lift¬
ing your school publications to a
higher stan/ling than they ever had
before, I take huge pleasure in
nominating Marjorie Hansen for
Commissioner of Publications.
Remember; experience counts,
and Marjorie has it.
DAVE ASHTON
Campaign Manager.
TED DAVIS
For Commissioner of Finance
In choosing a leader for the Boys’
League activities, we must take in¬
to consideration many qualifica¬
tions, namely, athletic ability,
(•cholarship, interest in school ac¬
tivities and general leadership.
My candidate, being a member of
the Honor Society, captain of the
track team, a football letterman,
and a member of the service point
committee, adequately fulfills these
necessary qualifications.
With the best interests of the
P.H.S. student body in mind, I
nominate Maynor Shove for Com¬
missioner of Boys’ Welfare.
BOB CARNEY
Campaign Manager.
The kind of commissioners we
want ot represent our well known
school are those who are in¬
terested in their work and will do
that work in the most efficient
way possible.
Ted Davis, as Commissioner of
Finance, would surely be one of
those described above. He would
be an efficient commissioner.
Have you ever seen him loafing on
a job? No, of course you haven’t
because he doesn’t loaf. His mind
is” on his work, and will not be de¬
tracted from that work till it is
done.
Have you ever seen Ted Davis
without a smile on his face. No,
of course you haven’t. Ted could
almost be identified by his smile.
He goes cheerfully about the work
he has to do, and does it thorough¬
ly. If you choose to elect Ted
Davis, I am sure that after his
term of office you can truthfully
say, “There was a real commission¬
er.”
Students, for and because of
these reasons I consider it a great
honor to nominate Ted Davis for
Commissioner of Finance.
LOUISE WHITE
Campaign Manager
PHILIP PRATT
For Commissioner of Publications
been one of the most successful in
the history of the school. Previous¬
ly he was treasurer of the Junior
class. He is a loyal member of the
Hi-Y, Pen -and Quill. Forum and
the Bauble and Bells. His presi¬
dency of the Pen and Quill has
been one of the best in the history
of the club.
If ever there was a commisioner
who is whole heart edl.v for P.H.S.
that commissioner is Phil Pratt.
•He lias proved his worth in his
first semester’s work, and is now
ready to serve this school to the ut¬
most of his ability.
Therefore, because I feel that
Phill Pratt is the best candidate
for the office, 1 nominate him for
Commissioner of Publications.
Signed,
STANLEY HAHN
Campaign Manager.
KENNETH REYNODS
For Commissioner »l Athletics
Reynolds for Athletics! Could
there be a more logical or better
fitted candidate for this office than
“Little Mike”? The answer, of
course, is in the negative. For the
past two years Mike has made a
letter in each of three major sports,
besides the numerous lightweight
and midget letters he collected in
his earlier years. He even sacrific¬
ed two good front teeth for Pas¬
adena higli school’s football su¬
premacy. in addition to his out
standing athletic record Mike has
proved his capability for leader¬
ship by his accomplishments as
Commissioner of Boys’ Welfare.
If you want a hard working, red-
blooded Commissioner of Athletics,
vote for Reynolds!
BUD HAWKINS
Campaign Manager.
RAYMOND KERR
For Commissioner of Boys'
Welfare
Friends:
A change in the office of Com¬
missioner of Publications in the
middle of the school year will make
ail the difference in the world whe¬
ther our publications for the com¬
ing semester are successful. The
policy started by Phil Pratt in the
first semester of office can not be
successfully carried out by another
candidate. If you want a good
"Chronicle” every week, and a
better “Annual" at the end of the
year, vote for Phil Pratt.
Phil’s first semester in the office
of Commisioner of Publications has
in proposing a candidate for
this office, you must be carefully
reminded of the qualification of
the position. The principle quali¬
fication would undoubtedly be
knowledge of athletics. For is not
the basic purpose of the Boys’
League to support and promote
school athletics? As a secondary
qualification you will readily agree
that leadership is essential in or¬
der to preside over a body as large
as the present Boys’ League.
Now, considering the qualifica¬
tions 'of the candidate that I pre¬
sent, I should say that two
years of athletic activity , in two
different major sports, would sup¬
ply him with abundant knowledge
of athletics to guide and conduct
the Boys' League through one of
its most successful semesters.
In reference" to the candidate's
ability as a leader, it is practically
unnecessary to say that his char¬
acteristics as a leader are devel¬
oped more in athletic competition
than in any other manner.
Thus establishing himself as an
excellent candidate through his
accomplishments and desire to
promote and develop the Boys'
League, I firmly believe it wise
to nominate Raymond Kerr for
Commissioner of Boys' Welfare.

MARGARET JEWELL
For Commissioner of Girls'
Welfare
missioner could be selected than
her.
Citizens of P. H. S., consider
the candidates carefully, and
choose those whom you think fit.
For m.v own part, 1 think there is
none more fit than Peggy Jewell,
anil with this in mind 1 place her
before the Student Body as a
candidate for Commissioner of
Girls' Welfare.

JACK SNYDER
For Commissioner of Finance
H ENDERSON PA I I. SON
For Commissioner of Athletics
It is^again time for us to con¬
sider the all important question
of selecting our comm isionevs who
are to lead us through our next
semester. For the different com-
missionships, different qualifi¬
cations are necessary. Probably
the three most important for a
commissioner of finance are the
following:
First, we must have a man
whose charater is such that we
would gladly give him our whole
hearted support.
Second, we must have a man
who is eager and willing to work
for us with the best that is in
him.
Third, we must have a man who
is not only eager to work for us,
but one who has the ability to
carry on successfully the work of
our preceding commissioner.
1 sincerely believe that my can¬
didate possesses all of these qual¬
ifications. He has been a member
of the Honor Society during the
past seven semesters and at the
present time he is president of
that organization.
He is also president of the S.
P. Q: R., besides being an active
member of several of the service
clubs of the school.
His willlingness to work for us
has been shown clearly during
his entire high school career,
both from the scholastic and the
athletic viewpoint. He also has
that most essential quality of
“school spirit.”
Therefore it is with these points
in view and with a desire to see
a capable and deserving man in
office that I nominate, for your
approval, Jack Snyder for the
Commision of Finance.
Z. WAYNE GRIFFIN,
Campaign Manager
HERB RESNER
For Commissioner of Entertainment
Now comes the time when those
who do what they can for the
honor of P. H. S. in leading her
on to a finer school are placed
before the members of the Stu¬
dent Body, that this group may
choose those whom they think
fit to guide the policies of the
school.
High among the offices of the
Student Body stands the office of
Commisioner of Girls’ Welfare.
For this office there is none more
fitted than Peggy Jewel. Her rec¬
ord speaks for itself. She has been
secretary of the Girls' League;
she has taken part in girls
athletics; she has-been an excep¬
tional scholar; indeed, Peggy
Jewell has been a whole-hearted
citizen of P. H. S. No better com-
Friends: "
In the old days when school was
more or less a joke for all con¬
cerned, anyone could he Commis¬
sioner of Entertainment without
much knowledge of arranging a
program for a F riday assembly.
But times have changed. Now
we need someone who will provide
assemblies that are real entertain¬
ment. Herb Resner is the man for
that job. During the past semester
the Friday assemblies which have
been arranged by Herb have been
the best in the history of the school.
If you were fortunate enough to
be present at the Gai-I-Wah-Go-
Wah. afternoon program, you know
that Herb is the one person who
knows what he’s doing when he
picks an entertainer. Herb has
been out for football and is now
out for basketball. He has made
the California Scholarship Feder¬
ation. He was president of the
Junior class, and has served faith¬
fully as Commissioner of Enter¬
tainment during the past semester.
Herb is active in many clubs of
this school
If you want assembly programs
and afternoon entertainments that
are far above par, vote for Herb
Resner and you will not regret
your vote. With the experience
of the past semester, Herb will
make your Friday assembly pro¬
grams the best you have or will
know while at Pasadena high
school.
Therefore, to insure the bigger
and better entertainments, I take
pleasure in nominating Herb Res¬
ner for Commissioner of Entertain¬
ment.
DAVE ASHTON
Campaign Manager.
To The Student Body of Pasadena
High School:
What are the characteristics
that student?; require or should
require in a student who aspires
to the office of Commissioner of
Athletics ? They are intelligence, a
thorough knowledge of athletics
and their value to the school, a
good scholarship record, and final¬
ly a good personality or the abil¬
ity to "mix” well.
Henderson Paulson has all of
these qualities. Having played
football for four years and having
been one of the lightweight eleven
which captured the Coast League
championship, and having secured
a place on the All-Southern team,
he knows and thoroughly under¬
stands athletics. Several semesters
in the Honor Society show him to
be a good scholar and his person¬
al quality is demonstrated by his
membership in many of our school
clubs. In several of these he is an
officer.
If you want efficiency and hon¬
esty, if you want an intelligent
handling of the office, cast your
vote for Henderson Paulson, an
athlete, a scholar ami a gentleman,
the logical man for Commissioner
of Athletics.

LET HA MORRIS
For Com missioner of Entertain¬
ment
in choosing a Commissioner of
Entertainment, it is necessary to
select one of strong personality.
I'm sure that all who know my
candidate will agree that she is
well qualified in this respect. Not
only would she be well fitted to
fill the office, but also she is one
who has the interests of the school
at heart.
My candidate has. spent a year
abroad,, and -from this experience
has had interesting contacts which
would assure P. H. S. of some
very interesting assemblies for the
coming year. As president of the
Girls' League Cabinet she has
proven herself an able leader of
student activities. Her experience
in this line makes her capable cl'
undertaking the duties of a com-
missionevship. The executive abil¬
ity of my candidate has also been
shown by the various offices she
has held in school clubs and by
the active part she has taken
while at junior high school.
With these things in view 1
take great pleasure in nominating
Letha Morris for Commissioner of
Entertainment.

BILL BEST
For Commissioner of Debating
career, and is now a member of
the C. S. F.
His ability as a leader is' shown
in the fact that at some time
during his sophomore or junior
year, he was either president or
treasurer of the Honor Socity,
Latin Club, Triple S, and Forum.
He is a member of the Hi-Y and
Ixrttermen’s Clubs. The most im¬
portant fact of all, however, is
that his fellow commissioners
thought enough of Bill and his
ability to elect him Chairman of
the Commission this semester.
1 don’t know what athletics has
do to with this office, but for the
benefit of those students who like
to put athletes in office, I will
say that Bill made 'll- letUV at
track, was on the tennis squad,
and is now playing on the light¬
weight basketball team.
Therefore, since . he fulfills the
requirements of the office, and
since he has so well undertaken
the duties this semester, 1 nomin¬
ate Bill Best for Commissioner of
Debating.
All of you who know him real¬
ize that he is the logical candi¬
date for the office and 1 hope that
this will help to show the rest >f
you why this is true.
JULIAN DUCLOS
Campaign Manager.
BOB CARNEY
For Commissioner of Finance
The coming semester is going
to be the biggest and best in
the history of Pasadena higli
school, and it is also going to lie
one of our most prosperous fi¬
nancial years under able guidance.
We, as students of P. H. S. want
to • select for our commissioners
worthy representatives to uphold
our reputation and honor.
in 'selecting a candidate for
Commissioner of Finance the stu
dent body should take into con¬
sideration leadership, ability,
scholarship, and interest in school
activities. My candidate is presi¬
dent of the junior class, a mem¬
ber of the honor society, and
takes part in ail prominent school
activities. He was also president
of the student body at Washing¬
ton junior high. His willingness
to work has been shown by his
splendid handling of the affairs of
the junior class, and 1 am sure
that he would display these same
qualities if he were elected as a
commissioner.
With these thoughts in mind,
and with the interest of the ,
school at heart, I nominate Boh
Carney for Commissioner of Fi¬
nance.
MAYNOR SHOVE,
Campaign Mgr.
ROCKWELL ROGERS
For Commissioner of Finance
In presenting the name of Bill
Best as a candidate for reelec¬
tion for the Commissionership of
Debating, I am nominating one
who, in my estimation, possesses
the qualifications necessary for
the position, and who meets the
requisites advanced by other stu¬
dents.
That a candidate be both ex¬
perienced and interested in the
line of work that the office super¬
vises, is generally considered to
be the most essential qualification.
Bill Best has been Commissioner
of Debating this semester and
has filled the office in fine shape.
He was the sole interscholastic
debater returning to school this
year, and was one of the partici¬
pants in the only debate held this
year.
Probably the second most im¬
portant qualification is that of
good scholarship, since a com¬
missioner who is low in his studies
cannot devote the desi red efforts
toward his work. Bill has been a
member of the Honor Society
every semester of his high school
Figures don’t lie, hut Rockwell
can juggle them so they serve the
same purpose.
Red Rogers has long- been known
by the students of P. H. S. as the
red-headed flash who sinks baskets
as a matter of habit. For many
years basketball coaches of this in¬
stitution have pinned their hopes of
success on Red's unfailing dead-eye,
and Rockwell has come through in
a way that has made him famous.
And he is still at it! On this very
night Red will be a potent factor in
putting Whittier in a position of
defeat and humility.
But he has another talent which
is not so universally known. Red
handles money with an ease and
grace which is surprising in one so
young. Besides, a natural fond¬
ness for money. Red has the deter¬
mination and the ability to serve
which are essential in a successful
commissioner of finance.
Vote for Rogers and you’ll never
I regret it.
Friends: 1 nominate Red Rogers
for commissioner of finance.
Yours for a bigger treasury,
