Boasting but two unimpressive victories this season, the
Compton Tartars will journey to the Rose Bowl tomorrow after¬
noon, where they will face the PJC Bulldogs. Game time is
tabbed for 4:00 p. m.
Against the Mallorymen’s record of six wins as compared to
two losses, Compton’s ledger shows victories over Santa Monica
9-0; and Glendale 12-10. On the other side of the ledger, it shows
where they have tasted defeat at the hands of Bakersifeld, Mo¬
desto, March Field, and were swamped under the Ventura
eleven by a 40-14 count.
The Tartars present a hefty line with Henry Sheller, a re¬
turn from last year’s squad, and Tom Johnston anchoring the
line at either end. Doran Mangan and big 212 pounder, Stanley
Nelson, hold their own from the tackle positions, while Stanton
Presnail and James Mulchahey, another 200-pounder, stop op¬
posing advances, flanking the pivot man. A 210 chunk of flesh,
in the personage of Frank Kirkland holds down the center po¬
sition.
Tartar power lies in the backfield with Don Powers, small,
speedy quarterback. Louis Gill and Bob Wolf do their share of
ball carrying in the right and left halfback posts. Douglas Up¬
shaw, another Compton threat, completes the backfield at the
fullback spot.
The Bullpup game will precede the varsity encounter, the
former slated for 2:00 p. m.

Under the critical observation of the Tournament of Roses Com¬
mittee, some 2500 PJC coeds have been reviewed in the search for
the 1942 Rose Queen.
Preliminary tryouts started last Thursday at East Campus,
moved up to West this week. Elimination of all but 350 candidates
being completed, secondary trials are scheduled November 25 in the
Sexson Auditorium.
Scholastic standards are now being checked, unsatisfactory
grades automatically disqualifying candidates. Scholastic qualifica¬
tions consist of not more than one D, E, or F. Judgement of girls
includes exceptional quality in appearance, carriage, poise, voice,
social ability. Majority of eliminations occur in the determination
of graceful carriage and general poise.
Completion of the second tryouts next week will leave 45 can¬
didates, who will be subjected to exacting judgment. These tryouts
are to be held according to class rating, seniors reporting to the
auditorium at 3:15, juniors at 3:45, and sophomores at 4:15. Dresses
and high heels are to be worn by all entrants.
