Dr. Harbeson's
Statement:
“For the time being it will
be necessary to postpone the
building of our new Student
Union. This has been occasi¬
oned by circumstances en¬
tirely outside of the control
of the Board of Education.
When the project was first
contemplated, the Board set
aside $100,000 for this pur¬
pose. To this amount the stu¬
dents were to add an addi¬
tional $30,000. Since the
closing of school last year,
however, building costs have
risen at a terrific rate, and
the lowest possible bid on a
building which a few months
ago could have been con¬
structed for $130,000 is now
in excess of $200,000. More¬
or-v.
over, building materials, par¬
ticularly steel, are not avail¬
able at any price.
“Under these circumstances,
I am sure that every stu¬
dent will understand the de¬
lay in getting the Student
Union under way, and will
await patiently the day when
a more favorable national and
international situation will
make possible the availability
of building supplies.”
John W. Harbeson.

Old and reentering students will register on Tuesday be¬
ginning at 8 o’clock. They will be given registration instruc¬
tions as they come on the grounds. Students who are working
and taking but one or two courses during the regular day
hours will go through the same procedure as any other day
student.
It is expected that hundreds of old students will be on
hand Monday to greet the new ones, help them register, show
them around, and in general to make them welcome to the
campuses. Old students will find this a convenient day to at¬
tend to any unfinished school business, hold group meetings,
and to meet old and new friends.
Extended Day (Evening) Students ;
Students who work during the daytime, and wish to
register, should report in the evening to Room 118 on the

Troubles
Toughest problem facing en¬
tering freshmen and other new
students at PJC is that of orient¬
ing themselves to a new way of
life, a faster gear of speed, and
totally unfamiliar landmarks.
Partial solution comes on “Pal
Day,” the last Sunday before
registration.
At the beginning of each se¬
mester freshmen and entering
juniors are assigned to older
students, “Pals”, who conduct
them on a detailed tour of the
campus, discuss student activi¬
ties, and provide an insight on
college life.
Touring the East Campus they
locate the Student Union, Cafe¬
teria, Gymnasiums, Science and
Technology buildings, plus the
all important Administration
building. At 2:30 p.m. they mi¬
grate to West Campus for a re¬
peat tour and Vesper services.
ENGINEERS
Night class in Mechanism 73
