37 earn life membership
in Alpha Gamma Sigma
Thirty-seven Alpha Gamma
Sigma members received perma¬
nent membership in. the scholar¬
ship organization Thursday. This
was four per cent out of the en¬
tire graduating class.
Temporary membership is lim¬
ited to students who have at
least a 3.0 grade point average in
16 or more units.
A ten per cent increase of the
over-all grade point ratio or 3.30
is required for permanent mem¬
bership during graduation.
“Alpha Gamma Sigma has
been with us a long time,” George
Josten, adviser, pointed out. “It
is primarily an organization to
promote scholarship for all PCC
students.”

The 73rd annual Graduation Exercises of the Pasadena
City Schools will take place in the Rose Bowl June 14 at 6:45
p.m. More than 3000 students from John Muir High School,
Pasadena High School and Pasadena City College will be on
hand. The white cap and gowned _

'Moonlight in Jamaica' sets mood
for prom at Huntington-Sheraton
“Moonlight in Jamaica” will set the mood for the annual
Pasadena City College prom at the Pool Gardens of the
Huntington-Sheraton Hotel, June 14, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Dress has been set as semi-formal. Planned under the super¬
vision of Lill Robinson, social af¬
fairs commissioner, the tradition¬
al affair is open to all Lancers.
Associated Student Body mem¬
bers are admitted free while the
cost for guests is $3. Bids are
available at the College Bank this
week.
Entertainment for the occasion
includes the band of Keith Wil¬
liams. Refreshments will be
served.
According to Miss Robinson,
“Moonlight in Jamaica” is the
highlight of the social year and
promises to be an appropriate
end to the school year.
Wiley announces
retirement plans
Arthur S. Wiley, French teach¬
er and foreign language depart¬
ment chairman “extraordinaire,”
has announced his retirement, ef¬
fective at the close of the present
semester.
Wiley was honored at a langu¬
age Council dinner Saturday in
Harbeson Hall, during which the
language council revealed estab¬
lishment of an annual $250 Ar¬
thur S. Wiley scholarship.
Wiley was born in Chicago and
raised in Boston. He received his
AB from Harvard University in
1922 and obtained his MA from
the University of Southern Cali¬
fornia. He did graduate work at
the University of California on
both the Los Angeles and Berke¬
ley campuses
Wiley began his teaching ca¬
reer as an assistant professor at
Occidental College and in 1931
came to Pasadena Junior College.
He is a member of Alliance
Francaise de Pasadena, serving
on the board fpr a number of
years and its president from 1939
to 1941. During the war Wiley
was one of the founders and on
the executive board of the French
War Relief.
Other organizations in which
he is a member include the South¬
ern California France Forever
and the Modern Language Asso¬
ciation. Serving on the executive
board of the former and presi¬
dent of the latter from 1940 to
1943.
Here at PCC he was the first
president of the Faculty Associ¬
ation, and is now chairman of the
language department. Mrs. De¬
light Barker, the secretary of the
language department, says em¬
phatically, “Mr. Wiley is a man
Who always gives freely of him¬
self and his time to help better
the foreign language depart¬
ment.”
Library loan period
Effective with the 1962 sum¬
mer sessions, PCC library
books are to be loaned for only
one week. Renewals will con¬
tinue to be accepted. All books
students have out presently
must be returned today.
high school graduates will receive
diplomas, and the black cap and
gowned college graduates will re¬
ceive degrees of Associate in
Arts.
Nursing students will be in uni¬
form, and school officials in the
traditional black academic robes.
THE THEME of this year’s ex¬
ercises is the “Dawn of New
Horizons.” Speaking on the
theme will be the graduating
class presidents, including PCC
Sophomore Class President Don
Ciliax; the valedictorians; and
Superintendent of Schools Robert
E. Jenkins.
Chairman in charge of the ex¬
ercises for the third year is PCC
Administrative Dean Armen Sa¬
rafian, who predicts “one of the
most beautiful and inspiring com¬
mencement services in the entire
country.” Aiding him are John
Muir and Pasadena High Schools’
assistant principals, Mrs. Lor-
rayne Zeutzius and Arthur Ditt-
berner.
CONFERRING the degrees is
Dr. Robert Freeman, president
of the board of education. In
charge of the marching and dis¬
tribution is Miss E. Suzanne Mac-
auley. Dr. H. Leland Green will
direct the music program, and
Robert Heckman the combined
school choirs.
The public is invited to attend
the exercises free of charge. Tick¬
ets, for convenience of seating

Harbeson awards
given to freshmen
Gail Williams and Mike Fisher
were recently awarded the John
W. Harbeson scholarships as out¬
standing members of the Fresh¬
man Class.
The presentation was made at
the annual awards and OMD tap¬
ping assembly last week by Ed
Sanders, president of OMD.
Scholarships of $100 each will
be given to the two toward the
furthering of their education.
The selection was made on the
basis of service, citizenship and
scholarship.
Among other activities Miss
Williams has served as editor of
the Pageant, PCC’s yearbook, and
Fisher as pep commissioner.

Baccalaureate services
set Sunday in Sexson
Pasadena City College’s annual Baccalaureate service will be
held Sunday at 8:15 p.m. in Sexson Auditorium. About 2000 people,
including members of the Pasadena City Schools’ administration
and at least 500 cap and gowned graduates, are expected.
The invocation and benediction will be given by Reverend John
H. Burt, rector of the All Saints Episcopal Church of Pasadena. Mrs.
Nancy J. Jennings, graduating salutatorian, will give the scripture
reading.
Presenting the main address is the Right Reverend Monsignor
North of St. Philip’s Church. His talk is entitled “Into the Arena.”
Providing music for the service are the PCC Chamber Orches¬
tra, the A Cappella Choir and the Madrigals.
The Chamber Orchestra, directed by Frank Van Der Maten, will
play Mascagni’s “Intermezzo Sinfonico” for the prelude, and Men¬
delssohn’s “March of the Priests” for the processional.
“Now Let Every Tongue Adore Thee” by Bach and “Praise Ye
the Lord” by Hovhaness are to be sung by the A Cappella Choir,
while the Madrigals will singe the choral response to the benediction.
The recessional is Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance,” after which
the graduates, their families and friends traditionally meet at the
mirror pools.

Ben Taylor named
’62 valedictorian
Benjamin Taylor, 19-year-old
physics major, has been named
valedictorian for Pasadena City
College in the 73rd annual Rose
Bowl Commencement Exercises,
June 14.
Taylor has served as president
of the Mathematics and Astrono¬
my Council, member of Rep
Council, Student Curriculum
Committee and Interdepartmental
Activities Commission, in addition
to maintaining the highest grade
point average at PCC.
He will become a life m ember
of Alpha Gamma Sigma this se¬
mester and has served as a read¬
er for advanced mathematics
classes at the college and a tutor
in high school geometry.
Taylor will continue his studies
at the University of California at
Berkeley this fall with plans to
become an astrophysicist.
Dental assistants
capped Friday
Annual capping ceremonies for
graduating dental assistants will
be held Friday from 8 to 10 p.m.
in Harbeson Hall.
Students who have successful¬
ly completed the dental assisting
program will receive caps and
certificates of completion.
Two awards will be given to
two outstanding students, one to
the student who has best met the
standard of education, efficiency,
loyalty and service, the other
award to the student who has ex¬
celled scholastically.
Presentation of the awards will
be made by representatives of the
various fields of dentistry and
community service organizations,
iurmen Sarafian, dean of instruc¬
tion, will be the principal speak¬
er. In his speech, Sarafian will
stress the importance of the stu¬
dents’ new goals in dentistry and
society in general.
