Freshmen Vie for
Harbeson Award
A lucky freshman boy and
girl will be announced as win¬
ners of the OMD Harbeson
award on Friday, May 31, at
the OMD carnival.
The award is a $50 scholar¬
ship and the recipients are stu¬
dents who have shown out¬
standing scholarship and lead¬
ership and who are planning
to attend PCC next year. It is
also given to encourage stu¬
dents to return to Pasadena
City College.
The award will be presented
by Chuck Phifer, OMD presi¬
dent, in the OMD assembly,
Tuesday, June 4. The money
will be available to the winners
upon registration in the fall
for financial purposes.
These two students are chos¬
en by a committee composed of
Miss Florence Brubaker, Dr.
Robert Haugh, Eugene Sulli¬
van, adviser to OMD, and four
OMD members.
These two freshmen will be
honored a third time at the
OMD banquet on June 8.
Pat Winchell and Chuck
Ayres were the recipients of
last year’s awards. The award
has been given for approxi¬
mately the last ten years and
is named for Dr. John W. Har¬
beson, the first honorary pres¬
ident of OMD.
• Both Chuck and Pat return¬
ed to PCC and continued in
their leadership so that they
were made members of OMD.
Thus they justified the choice
made by the organization
which recognized their abilities.
Chuck has recently been elect¬
ed to the office of ASB presi¬
dent and Pat has carried out
her leadership as president of
Spartans and WAA.

Mystery of the East Destends on
PCC Campus for Friday Spettatular
Twenty-eight booths will rise
Thursday on the women’s bas¬
ketball courts as OMD brings
forth its 1957 carnival extrava¬
ganza entitled “Oriental Holi¬
day.”
Pagodas, Japanese lanterns
and mandarin costumes will
add oriental flavor to the twen¬
ty-ninth annual carnival to be
hold on the PCC campus. Coolie
hats have been worn during
the past week to promote the
coming event. The 28 booths,
set up by clubs, organizations
and councils, will do their part
to bring the mystery of the Far
East to Pasadena.
Scrip, the official medium of
exchange for the evening, will
be sold at two or three places
on the courts. Scrip sells for
five cents a ticket and can be
purchased at the scrip wagons
only. It is the only form of
money that will be accepted at
the booths.
A platform will be erected at
the far end of the courts, near¬
est the Women’s Gym, from
which all official announce¬
ments will proceed and on
which the queen will be crown¬
ed. Winners of the two OMD
Harbeson awards will also be
announced during the evening,
but will be presented with
their certificates later, at the
OMD-A wards assembly the fol¬
lowing Tuesday morning.
Booths will be erected Thurs¬
day and must be down, and the
area cleared, by 10 a.m. Satur¬
day morning or the lax club
will forfeit the $5 deposit. Club
presidents are reminded that
all receipts for expenses must
be turned in to Chuck Ayres
by Wednesday noon, June 5.
The carnival will begin at
6 p.m. and last until midnight.

Seven Candidates Compete in
OMD Carnival Queen Contest
Seven coeds have been vying since Monday morning
for the title of OMD Queen for 1957. The winner will
receive her crown next Friday evening in the middle of
the OMD carnival activities. At approximately 10 p.m.
Friday evening all activities on
the women’s basketball courts
will cease while Dr. William B.
Langsdorf, PCC president,
places the crown on the head of
one of the contenders.
PCC students have been
voicing their choice for queen
by placing a penny in the jars
in the main hall of C Building
which bears the name of the
candidate they prefer. Each
penny counts as one vote. Mon¬
ey collected in this way goes
for scholarships which OMD
presents to deserving students
each year.
The seven girls competing
foi OMD Queen have been
chosen by the respective coun¬
cils on campus. They are Ann
Perine, English Council; Marty
Otto, Sophomore Council; Mary
Lou Lee, Music Council; Sally
Dorau, Life Science Council;
Charlotte Ewan, Art Council;
Evelyn Barschdorff, Language
Council; and Peggy Bennett,
Technology. Each of the girls
takes an active part in student
body affairs and is a member
of various organizations on
campus.
Voting will continue until 3
p.m. Friday afternoon.
