- Description
- Stephen Mack III (b. 1943 in Pasadena) was the first African American on a rose float. A precocious child, he was selected as a representative of the Free Public Schools. "One day in the 4th grade, the teacher told all the Negroes to stand because she was counting the Mexicans, Asians, and Negroes in her class. I didn't know what a Negro was but my friend, Nathaniel, told me that I had to stand. When I told my father, he sat me down for a talk." As a boy, Stephen tried to get a job sweeping but was told "we don't hire Negroes". He finally found his first job washing dishes at Gwen's Restaurant on Sunnyslope and Colorado for 55 cents an hour. Stephen also remembers a few crosses burned in Altadena.
