- Description
- Shigeo Takayama attended Lincoln Elementary School and Pasadena High School. He was the same age group as Jackie Robinson and walked to school together with him. He also played football at PJC with Jackie, sharing a room on away games. Shig writes a note about his PHS ribbon: The PHS baseball team participated in the 1934 20 30 Club BB tournament in Pomona. In 3 games, I got 7 hits in 10 official times at bat. During the awards banquet at Pomona College, Will Rogers was the main speaker. After the dinner and prior to his talk, there was so much of the utensils missing that Rogers asked all the boys holding utensils to bring them to his table and he will shake their hands. I and another player had a fork and a soup spoon and we turned in the fork. I still have the spoon. The name of the school is stamped on each item making them vulnerable for souvenir seekers. When I turned in the fork, Rogers asked me where I was from. When I said Pasadena, he said the people there were snooty but good at heart. Mr. Rogers was killed in 1935 in a plane crash in Alaska at a start of round-the-world flight with Wiley Post. Coach Dunn thought I played well enough to be considered for the All-Star team. A player from Fullerton, a younger brother of Arky Vaughn, shortstop of the Pittsburg Pirate baseball team, was selected as 3rd baseman. The name of Ted Williams was widely mentioned. I did not see him play until the team went to San Diego in May.
