- Description
- This was taken in Montebello at the house at Uyematsu's Star Nursery, across from Montebello High School. Mother Kuniko is holding the baby, Marian, on the far left. Sitting on the couch in a kimono is Alice. Standing above the couch in a kimono is Sonoko, daughter of Francis' first wife. Francis Uyematsu is holding baby Starr. Standing next to his father is Francis Genichrio, later, the father of Amy and Mary Uyematsu. Alice died of tuberculosis in her early 20's in Manzanar concentration camp. Starr died in October of 1941 of heart problems at sixteen years of age. Amy Uyematsu (Tachiki) was editor of the seminal Asian American studies book, Roots, in 1971 and a Sansei poet. Mary Uyematsu Kao works at the UCLA Asian American Sudies Center.
